Paul Goldberg, RN, BSN

Paul Goldberg, RN, BSN, joined ONA as the assistant executive director of Labor Relations in 2004 and supervises a growing labor department of 20 staff members. In Paul’s capacity as an ONA director, and since 2005, he sits as an Executive Board vice president of the Oregon AFL-CIO. Beginning in 2008 Paul became one of the founding members of the National Federation of Nurses and currently sits as an advisory board member to the NFN. Under his leadership the number of represented ONA nurses has grown by nearly 2,000 to 12,500 members. Paul has been an activist as a nursing and labor advocate for over 33 years after graduating from UCLA School of Nursing in 1976. In 1986 after ten years as a staff nurse he transitioned to representing nurses in the role of one of ONA’s first regional staff-nurse labor representatives. Paul is an expert negotiator and has bargained over 50 contracts in 23 years

Linda Sidney joined ONA as an administrative assistant in the Labor Relations Department in April 2007.  Prior to joining ONA, Linda worked for 23 years with the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions/Fédération Canadienne des syndicates d’infirmières/infirmiers and also worked as a social worker on two First Nations Reservations.  She has a Bachelor of Social Work from Memorial University of Newfoundland & Labrador, St. John’s, NL, Business Administration Certificate, Keewatin Community College, Thompson MB, a Convention Meeting Planning Diploma, Algonquin College, Ottawa, ON, and other certificates: Steward Training- Union and Grievance Procedures and Grant and Technical Writing Certificates.

Melissa Tangedal, BS, CCH

Melissa Tangedal has been the program assistant in the Economic & General Welfare (Labor Relations) department since January, 2010. She spent 3.5 years in the ONA Professional Services department. She supported continuing education, NPO, OCCNS, Scholarships (including ONF), Cabinet on Nursing Practice, survey management & maintained the ONA library. Prior to ONA, Melissa worked in the private education sector as a senior admissions, student manager, counselor and as a director advising over 1000 students about continuing education credits, certifications & degrees. She has a Bachelor of Business Information Systems Management & Advanced Certification Clinical Hypnotherapy.

Susan Bruce, RN, joined the ONA in February 2010 as a labor representative for Providence Medford Medical Center. She has worked at Providence Medford Medical Center as a registered nurse in the CCU since 1995 where she earned the 2005 PMMC Employee of the Year award. Before joinign ONA, Susan spent a year working on the Providence Medford Medical Center nurses' organizing campaign leading up to their first contract.

Tresa Cavanaugh joined ONA in August 2010 as a labor relations representative, assisting in representing the nurses at OHSU during the negotiation process. Her career in union advocacy began shortly after being hired by Lewis & Clark College, as a legal assistant for the Legal Clinic in 2001. She served as President of Local 4912, AFT-Oregon, representing the administrative staff at Lewis & Clark College. During her time at the college, she successfully negotiated two contracts and handled grievance issues. She earned her JD degree in Law from Lewis & Clark Law School in 2008. Tresa earned her BS in psychology from Portland State. Prior to joining ONA, she served as the Grievance Director, handling contract violations, mediations and arbitrations for UFCW Local 555.

Sam Gieryn, JD, is a Labor Relations Representative in the Economic and General Welfare Department. He has an extensive background managing programs and representing clients on behalf of unions and other nonprofit organizations. Sam worked as a Staff Representative and Organizer for AFSME for eight years and for approximately five years with Wisconsin Citizen Action as an Organizer. His professional resume reflects a strong history of Organizing, Collective Bargaining, Contract Administrations, Litigations, Local Union Administration , Legislative and Political Action. Sam has a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin and a Law Degree from Marquette University Law School.

Alison Hamway has worked as a union representative since 1978. She has been employed by ONA since 2006, where her roles include contract administration at all levels, training local union activists, and acting as chief spokesperson in negotiations for 5 hospital bargaining units (3 private sector, 2 public sector). Co-chair of Labor Management Committee (Bend) and Joint Labor Relations Committee (Redmond). Previous employers include SEIU Local 503, AFSCME Council 75, and California Nurses Association. She also serves as a community member on Cascade Health Care’s Quality Improvement Committee. She has a master’s degree in industrial and labor relations from the University of Oregon.

Christine L. Hauck has been a labor relations representative for ONA since 2005, representing ONA nurses in the Corvallis area where she negotiates collective bargaining agreements, grievances, leadership development and legislative agenda. Prior to her work at ONA, Mrs. Hauck worked for SEIU Local 49, as a labor relations representative for five years. Mrs. Hauck has also worked as a certified nurses aide, home health aide, in both private hospital and trauma centers. Mrs. Hauck is currently completing her Bachelor of Science in business/health administration. Mrs. Hauck has been married for 19 years to her husband (Michael) and has two teenagers Samantha and Austin. In her spare time Mrs. Hauck, enjoys coaching volleyball and soccer, and reading.
Sally LaJoie

Sally LaJoie joined ONA in early 2009. She is the labor relations representative for Providence St. Vincent. Prior to joining the organization, Sally worked as an attorney in private practice representing employees in employment-related claims. After leaving private practice, she worked at ONA in 2004-2005 as the labor relations representative for the Samaritan Health System facilities, Tuality Community Hospital and the Benton County Health Department. Prior to re-joining ONA, Sally worked at the Oregon State Bar Association as a public affairs attorney. She completed law school at Willamette College of Law and received her B.S. from Willamette University College of Liberal Arts.
Rebecca (Becky) McCay, RN

Becky McCay joined ONA in January 2010 as a labor relations representative.  Before that, she served as bargaining unit chair at Grande Ronde Hospital and was a member of the negotiating team. Under Becky’s leadership the first contract of her negotiating team resulted in some of the highest wages in Northeastern Oregon. Successive contracts have resulted in a vibrant safe patient handling program and a renewed atmosphere of co-workers.  Becky earned the honor of Bargaining Unit Leader of the Year. Becky has been a hospital staff nurse in the primary nursing specialty emergency, trauma for the past 14 years. Becky holds a baccalaureate degree in nursing.

Gary L. Nauta has been a labor relations representative with ONA since 2008. Gary provides labor representation for McKenzie-Willamette, Mercy Medical, Peace Harbor, Cascade Health Solutions, Coquille Valley Hospital and Coos County Nurses. Prior to his work with ONA, Mr. Nauta was a fire captain with the Eugene Fire Department and the president of the Eugene Firefighters Association from 1996-2005. In addition to his labor background, he has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Oregon in community service and public affairs.

Jaime is a labor relations representative at ONA and currently works with Providence Seaside Hospital, Providence Willamette Falls Hospital, Providence Milwaukie Hospital, Providence Home Services, Silverton Hospital and Clatsop County. Jaime has over 16 years experience working in the health care industry, first as a health care worker and then as union staff. She is originally from Indiana where she received her bachelor's in labor relations and then went on to pursue a master's in labor relations at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Jaime has worked with unions in Oregon and California and is a seasoned labor organizer.

Courtney Niebel joined the ONA in 2005 as an Organizer. She has assisted in organizing several unrepresented facilities including Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, Providence Home Health nurses and Providence St. Vincent per diem nurses in Portland. Ms. Niebel is currently a labor relations representative for Amedisys Home Health, Multnomah County, and Oregon Health Sciences University. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in english and political science from California State University, East Bay.

Rob Nosse is a labor representative at Providence Portland and Providence Hood River.  He has been doing union organizing and representation work since 1996.  Before coming to ONA he worked at a non-nursing health care union and did a lot of work with the Coalition of Unions and the Kaiser Permanente Labor Management Partnership.

Julie Serrano is a Labor Relations Representative with ONA representing nurses in Bay Area -Hospital, Coquille Valley Hospital and Coos County Public Health. She is a Registered Nurse with her Bachelors in Nursing from OHSU. Julie has worked with ONA since 2008 when she led the nurses at Providence Medford Medical Center in its organizing efforts through a successful election where she assisted in negotiating and implementing of a first time contract. She has worked for 11 years at PMMC as a Certified Labor and Delivery Nurse. She is married to her husband, Mike, for 16 years. They have two teenage daughters, Sara and Madison.

Maureen Smith, MS

Maureen Smith is a labor relations representative for ONA. She represents nurses at Sacred Heart Medical Center and Sacred Heart Home Care Services in Eugene and Springfield. She also represents nurses at Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence. Maureen started with ONA in 2007 and prior to that was a labor organizer with Service Employees International, Local 503 for eleven years. Maureen received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Indiana University and a master’s degree in public policy and administration from the University of Oregon in 1995. She got her start in the labor movement at the Labor Education and Research Center (LERC) at the U of O where she worked for two years.
Sarah Thompson, BA

Sarah joined ONA as a labor relations representative in 2013 and currently works with Providence Portland Medical Center and the ProvRN Providence Triage Service Center. Originally from Texas, she has considered herself an Oregonian since 1989 and received her bachelor’s degree in Economics and History from Portland State University. Sarah has over 12 years’ experience as union staff, representing both nursing and non-RN health care units all over the country and is a seasoned organizer and negotiator.
